about

'Videorama' is the debut release from Flowers of America (FOA), an exciting new solo project from Elk City vocalist Renée LoBue. As she wrote songs for the follow-up to Elk City's critically acclaimed 2018 Bar/None release 'Everybody’s Insecure', LoBue realized she was creating something more personal, more introspective. She experienced a musical shift after a deep immersion in the mediums of analog collage + lo-fi video art. “This sounds like its own thing,” she recalls. LoBue recruited Elk City bandmate Ray Ketchem to assist with the project at his Magic Door Recording in Montclair, NJ. (As a noted producer, engineer, and mixer, Ketchem has worked with acts such as Guided by Voices, Alex Chilton, and Luna.) LoBue sang and played a Roland electronic piano; then Ketchem went to work. “I took Renée’s beautifully simple piano bits and manipulated them over and over,” he explains, “expanding, enhancing, fleshing it out, seeing what can be done with the technology.” The results mesh LoBue’s gorgeous vocals and vivid lyrics with a wild range of soundscapes: Ominous and ethereal, rocking and gentle, dark and uplifting, strange and wonderful. Immerse yourself in 'Videorama'.
